Diarrhoea is passing looser or more frequent stools than what is normal for you. You or your family may need to go to the toilet more often.
There are many different causes of diarrhoea:
Acute (short term) diarrhoea is usually caused by bacteria (such as salmonella), viruses, or parasites (like giardia).
Chronic (long term) diarrhoea can be a result of underlying medical conditions, such as gluten and lactose intolerance, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic bowel infection, inflammatory bowel disease, or bowel cancer.
Most of us have experienced travel diarrhoea while visiting places where the climate or the sanitary practices differ from ours. Although painful and annoying, it usually passes quite quickly. Travel diarrhoea can occur from consuming contaminated food or water. You may also experience diarrhoea if you are under emotional stress, if you binge drink alcohol or if you’re on certain medications.
If you are concerned about irregularities in your stools, please speak to your doctor.
